Possible Nathusius' Pipistrelle at Colwick Park
During a bat detector evening at Colwick Park on April 20th 2007 we noticed pipistrelle bats with very low peak frequency calls. We had already picked up both common (45kHz) and soprano (55kHz) pipistrelles but the new calls were peaking at about 40kHz. Ian Dunn made some recordings using a Duet bat detector and minidisc recorder. The calls when analysed using BatSound software gave the following results
- Average frequency of maximum energy = 39.5 kHz
- Average inter pulse interval = 110.5 ms
- Average call duration of 8.5ms
These figures are consistent with Nathusius' pipistrelle a species so far only rarely recorded in Nottinghamshire. We will be revisiting the site over the next few weeks to see if more recordings can be made. There are several known pipistrelle roosts close by so maybe one of these is home to this species
