Barbastelle
Barbastella barbastellus
The Barbastelle is a rare species throughout Britain but recent winter records in neighbouring counties has led us to suspect that they may also be a Nottinghamshire species. The news of a nursery colony in Lincolnshire and hibernation records close to the county boundary has hightend our suspicions. In June 2011 the batgroup targeted a small area of woodland close to small village in east Nottinghamshire. We recorded two bats, one from the woodland and the other in the village. Both recordings are shown below. The first recording is from the woodland and shows a call peaking at about 32kHz. The second recording shows the more typical two part call, the first part peaking at 32kHz and the second higher frequency convex pulse at around 45kHz. The third call is from within the woodland and was recorded in September 2011.
